Partnering for Regional Growth: EDQ’s Regional Tour

Last month, members of Economic Development Queensland’s (EDQ) Executive Leadership Team (ELT) visited Cairns, Townsville and Rockhampton, meeting with local councils, industry leaders, and community stakeholders to explore opportunities to accelerate housing supply and drive regional growth.

This tour reflects EDQ’s renewed focus on collaboration — building strong partnerships to deliver housing and infrastructure faster and more effectively across Queensland.

Spotlight on Cairns

In Cairns, EDQ participated in a UDIA-led industry event to discuss the newly declared Mount Peter Priority Development Area (PDA) — a strategic initiative that will unlock 18,500 homes and support over 42,000 new residents.

EDQ CEO Julian Simmonds and Board Chairman Brendan O’Farrell joined a panel alongside Division 2 Councillor Matthew Tickner and UDIA Cairns President Nathan Lee Long to discuss the new PDA and answer industry questions.

Regional engagement in Townsville and Rockhampton

In Townsville and Rockhampton, EDQ met with local councils and industry partners to explore opportunities for housing and industrial development. The team visited key EDQ sites and future land release areas, reinforcing EDQ’s commitment to supporting regional Queensland through strategic planning and infrastructure coordination.

Why it matters

EDQ’s regional engagement is part of a broader strategy to deliver 1 million homes by 2044, with a strong focus on regional Queensland. By working closely with councils, industry, and communities, EDQ is helping to unlock land, streamline approvals, and deliver infrastructure that supports liveable, connected communities.
