Unlocking Growth in Far North Queensland: Mount Peter PDA
Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), in partnership with Cairns Regional Council and industry leaders, are driving forward the Mount Peter Priority Development Area (PDA) — a transformative project set to deliver housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunity for the Cairns region.
A strategic growth precinct
Located near Gordonvale in Cairns’ Southern Growth Corridor, the Mount Peter PDA is one of the last remaining greenfield development areas in the region. It is expected to accommodate:
- Over 18,500 new homes
- More than 42,000 future residents
- ~$12.8 billion in economic benefits over the life of the project
The PDA spans approximately 3,300 hectares, with a focus on coordinated infrastructure delivery, streamlined planning, and responsible community outcomes.
Collaborative planning for liveable communities
EDQ is working closely with Cairns Regional Council and state agencies to ensure infrastructure is delivered early and efficiently, enabling homes to be built sooner and communities to thrive.
“The Mount Peter PDA is essential for Cairns’ future growth. It’s our last greenfield development area and a great opportunity to get new housing to market as soon as possible.”
— Mark Wuth, Cairns Regional Council
“Ensuring that we work closely with EDQ means we bring the best of both worlds — their experience and our local expertise — to make it happen.”
— Mark Wuth, Cairns Regional Council
“A partnership between Council and EDQ brings together statewide delivery experience and local knowledge to ensure we’ve got a clear path for housing and infrastructure over the long term.”
— Mark Wuth, Cairns Regional Council
Engaging with industry
EDQ’s partnership approach extends beyond government, with active engagement from industry stakeholders a considered approach with the planning of the Priority Development Area.
“The impact of this PDA across government, industry and community is enormous.”
— Sharon Vella, Master Builders Queensland
“This will certainly boost long-term growth and economic stability for our region.”
— Sharon Vella, Master Builders Queensland
“We’ve worked collaboratively with council for many years supporting this PDA — it’s important to industry and to the people of Cairns.”
— Sharon Vella, Master Builders Queensland
