What is the RDX Life Sciences Centre at Lumina?

Innovation June 29, 2024

An exciting chapter in Queensland’s biomedical sector has begun, with work beginning on the RDX Life Sciences Centre at Lumina, a state-of-the-art $154 million research centre thanks to the support of Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) – the Queensland Government’s land use planning and property development agency.

Construction has officially begun on the Gold Coast of a new cutting-edge facility set to revolutionise the healthcare and research landscape in Queensland. Developed by Northwest Healthcare Properties, in collaboration with EDQ The RDX Life Sciences Centre at Lumina (RDX) promises to be a world-class hub for life sciences, research, and technological advancements.

What is RDX?

RDX is a premium eight-level health and innovation facility fitted for research, biotech, clinical and educational functions. RDX will be used for cutting-edge life sciences work such as neuroendovascular radiology, interventional cardiology innovation and training, rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient clinical services, human clinical trials, research and virtual care via robotic technologies.
Once completed, RDX will be home to the state-of-the-art Neutex Image-guided Therapy Surgery and Robotics Training Centre – An Australian first.

By providing unique training opportunities outside of traditional hospital settings, RDX aims to attract the best minds in the industry and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Who is involved in RDX?

RDX has been developed by Northwest Healthcare Properties, Australia’s largest healthcare real estate owner, in collaboration with Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), the Queensland Government’s land use planning and property development agency.

Once complete, RDX will be home to Phillips’ multi-million-dollar Azurion biplane interventional neurosurgery platform technology, and world-first Image-Guided Surgical Training and Technologies Centre.

Where is RDX and what will it look like?

RDX will be located within Lumina, the Queensland Government’s 9.5 hectare commercial development dedicated to growing the life sciences, health and technology-related businesses within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP).

The GCHKP is Asia-Pacific’s emerging health and innovation hub. It’s a unique global business location for high-tech industry development, research collaboration and jobs of the future. Businesses can benefit from more than $5 billion of health, education and transport infrastructure already invested in the Precinct, including two light rail stations, Griffith University, Gold Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast Private Hospital and Smith Collective residential and retail community

EDQ is the landowner, master developer and planning authority for Lumina, and is responsible for its development over the next 10 to 15 years, over which time Lumina’s 16 development-ready sites are projected to contribute an extra 12,000 jobs and an additional $1.4 billion to our economy.

How will RDX benefit Queensland and Queenslanders?

For Queenslanders with complex brain or spinal cord conditions, RDX will offer a range of therapy and research services.

For medical and health-tec professionals, RDX will offer unique training opportunities, aiming to equip Queensland workers with best-practice, high-value skills and also to attract the best minds in the industry to the Sunshine State.

This centre will house instruments and technology specifically targeted to such conditions, such as neuroendovascular radiology as well as interventional cardiology innovation and training, specialised rehabilitation inpatient and outpatient clinical services, a phase 1 first in human clinical trials unit, research and virtual care robotic technologies plus other health, education, and research-related areas.

For Queensland, this world-class life science, research, and innovation building will cement our position as one of the most advanced health and knowledge hubs in the Asia-Pacific region and will foster further healthcare and investment opportunities.

When will RDX be completed?

RDX is scheduled for completion in mid-2025. Once complete, the building will embody sustainable and resilient principles while delivering cutting-edge healthcare solutions, following a design to achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating. Its completion will mark another crucial step in positioning the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct as a leading hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The RDX centre will support up to 400 construction jobs and about 1000 long-term jobs.

Queensland’s biomedical industry is safeguarding your health

The RDX Life Sciences Centre at Lumina is just one of the many examples of how we’re supporting Queensland biomedical success.
