The first North Queensland Regional Plan, PlanNQ, is currently being prepared and North Queenslanders are being asked to join in the conversation to tell the Queensland Government what makes the region unique and how to best plan for the future.

PlanNQ will provide an opportunity to set out clear goals that will protect the region's unique lifestyle, provide well-connected transport, communication and social networks, safeguard the natural environment, and embrace diversity through a range of community, housing and employment and development styles.

The region includes five local government areas:

  • Burdekin
  • Charters Towers
  • Hinchinbrook
  • Palm Island
  • Townsville.

The Queensland Government is committed to developing PlanNQ in collaboration with the local councils and the community. An extensive consultation program has been developed to encourage people to have their say about what they see as key opportunities for the region.

Community members can get involved during two rounds of engagement activities:

  1. An initial engagement period to provide information on regional planning as well as develop a vision for the region.
  2. A formal consultation period to generate feedback on the draft regional plan through submissions.
