Councillors are elected to serve and represent the interests of the whole community in their local government area. You must ensure that local government decisions serve the overall public interest and you must take action to avoid any actual or perceived conflict between your own interests and the interests of the community in general.

The local government legislation sets out what local governments and councillors must do if they are considering matters in which a councillor has an interest.
